Chess

Today we did some chess in the morning. I faced Alana it was a short first game but the second game was horrendous it was half an hour but in the end Alana had won it. So far this year in chess on the Leaderboard I have ended in 14th place that is the end of my last blog post for this year.

My favourite part of the year was doing fibonacci numbers and a bees life.  The most challenging part of my year has been the technology challenges and the must dos and picks.  I am hoping that next year we do less must dos and picks because I find them hard!

Week 5

Today we started the day with a Wilson game, kind of like Piccadilly Circus. We continued with our passion time. Kyle and I did an experiment to make a lava cup.  You need a 1/4 cup of vegetable oil, food colouring, one tablespoon of salt and water.  The salt would fall through the oil, and create air bubbles that moved up towards the surface.  After morning tea I did my must do's and picks. The must do I did was flower biology.  I used a dinoscope to look at the parts of the flower and how they reproduce. At lunch we played dodgeball. The score was 8 to 8. I have just got my blog finished and next I am doing must do's and picks.

Term 4 week 4

Today we started the morning with a visitor coming in and talking about anti whaling. Some of the sea shepherds boats were called Bob Barker, Steve Irwin and Bridgette Bardot. After morning tea we did our environment projects. Our group finished making our flyers for Thompsons bush. Now we are doing our blog then we are doing passion time.

Waihopai river planting

Today we did planting at the Waihopai river. We got there on a bus and then we walked to the planting place. We had planted 250 flax bushes. We did them on hill and the muddy ground. We were there from 9:15 to 11:50. You had to put a mat around the flax then put 4 Bamboo sticks in the 4 holes on the mat then put this  plastic maroon bag over the plant to keep it warm inside. We came back and had lunch and now I am doing my blog post.

Week 2 at Enrich

Today we started with passion time I did chemistry with Kyle and Hyrum. First we did an experiment called "Eating Nails for Breakfast". You had to get some cornflakes, a plastic bag and water. Next, you crunch up the cornflakes and put them in a plastic sealed bag.  Next put some water in the bag and let it set for 5 minutes. Then you get a magnet and you will see iron flakes. After that we had morning tea and then played chess. At 11.30am we did Must dos and Picks. For that I did a garden design. Then it was time for lunch and now we are doing our blog post.

Week 10

Today at Enrich we started off as normal and we played some chess. I did not move up or down the leader-board. We continued with our passion time. I did some chemistry with Kavarn. We started making our ice cream ball. We got the idea for it off Steve Spangler Science.  You had to put some ice in a plastic bag, then put some rock salt in as well.  In a separate bag you put in milk and vanilla essence and 2 tablespoons of sugar.  YOu put it on the ground, and then roll it around until the milk mixture goes solid.  We put it in the freezer and will check on it shortly.  After that we had a break.  We did some more passion time for another half an hour then we did a P4C rotation in 3 groups.  Our question today was "It it ever okay to pollute?" We had lunch after that and now I am doing my blog and next I am finishing my environment project with Kyle.  Today we are finishing our brochure for Thompson's Bush.

Monday 10 September 2012

Week 9

Today at 9.15am we played chess for 30 minutes.  I played Kyle and he won.  Then we did our environment projects.  My group finished our Keynote about Thomson's Bush.  I did a page on the predators you need to look out for.  After morning tea, we watched a clip about air pollution.  We learnt that Iran has quite a few cities that have a lot of air pollution.  Ulaan Bataar in Mongolia  is the second most polluted city in the world.  The cleanest city in the world is Wellington!  We were surprised that we have the cleanest city in the world!  We looked it up on the computer, and it said that China had the most CO2 pollution, but they were not included in the clip we watched about the 10 most polluted cities in the world.  We played a Wilson game after lunch called Piccadilly Circus.  You stood in a circle and we had to pass a ball around the circle by running to another person and giving it to them.  You couldn't give it to the person right beside you, or else you would have to start again.  Once you got the ball, and gave it to another person, you sat down.  We tried playing it with 1 ball - our time was 1.08min.  We played it with 2 balls - our time was 1.35min.  Then we played it with 4 balls and our time was 2.02min.  We tried a second round with 4 balls, but we all got muddled!  Now that I'm finished my blog, I can go onto passion time.  I am going to do some painting.

Monday 27 August 2012

This morning we started off different to normal. We wrote our goals for our environment projects on the computer then we continued with our environment projects. I am doing mine about Thomson's bush.  We are planning on planting some more plants there that attract native birds. After that it was morning tea. Later we did a Wilson game called Bulls-eye. Then we did our high interest stations. I carried on with Fibonacci numbers.  I learnt that a cow has to be 2 years old to have a baby and a rabbit has a month being pregnant and a month to have a pair of babies. And we learnt that a female honeybee has two parents and a male only has one. That is because the male has to fertilise the egg for it to be a female.

Monday 20 August 2012

Kiaora Jackson,

Working with you during our Fibonacci workshop today was really interesting.  You are great when it comes to working with large numbers! I was impressed with your accuracy, and motivation to keep working through the sequence.  You did well at following through the honey bee's family tree, and making connections with the Fibonacci sequence from this.  I am looking forward to challenging you again next week with more examples of where this sequence can be found in nature!

Alana

Term 3 week 6

Today we started of with Leaderboard Chess. I challenged Agustin and he bet me. We continued with our high interest stations. I did fibonacci  numbers. Here is an example 0'1'1'2'3'5'.  Each time you add the two numbers before.  So, 0 + 1 = 1.  1 + 1 = 2 and 2 + 1 = 3.  Can you work out what the next number would be? We learnt that a honey bee male only has a mother and a female bee has a mother and a father.  If the egg doesn't get fertilised by the male, it turns into a male, but if the egg does get fertilised by the male, it turns into a female.

Week 4

This morning we did a form about our own goals we need to achieve this term. At 9.40am we had a game of chess - I faced Katie It was close and Katie only just won! Right after morning tea we did high interest stations. I was in biology/dinoscopes with Darryn then we did our environment projects. I was on B.M.X track mission then I changed to helping with Thomson's bush. We've just finished lunch and next I am going to do debating. Darryn had told us this morning Mount Tongariro blew up during the night.

Monday 23 July 2012

Today at Enrich

This morning we got into groups of 4, we made our own mural on a piece of paper we used felts, scissors and kiwi icons. After that we had to do a technology challenge in 20 minutes. The materials were tin foil, coloured sticks, skewers, straws, cup, cardboard and a shuttlecock.  We were trying to make a shuttlecock launcher.  We are going to test these at the end of the day to see which group can launch their one the furthest!

Monday 16 July 2012

First day of term 3

This morning we started off with a Wilson game - the hoop game.  After that we got to choose an activity out of maths - tessellations, science - chemistry, or art - painting.  I chose maths - tessellations.  A tessellation is where there are no gaps and no overlaps and you have the same picture repeating.  I did mine with birds.  It worked!

T2 assessment

Today it is the last day of term. At about 10:00 we did a self-assessment for term 2. It had some tricky questions about this term. Earlier before that we played a Wilson game - you had to get in a group of 3, hold hands in a circle, and you had to keep your feet together.  Each time Darryn clapped, your whole group had to jump at the same time so that your feet all left the ground and then touched the ground at the same time.  Sometimes, Darryn would trick us and almost clap his hands.  If you jumped, you had to go back to the start again.  You had to work together to get all the way to a hula hoop and get your whole group in the hoop without touching the hoop with your feet!  Below is my self-assessment sheet:

Gifted week

This week it is gifted awareness week it is very important because it makes people aware of giftedness. We got cake to celebrate being gifted! We learnt the habits of mind. Some of them were: thinking flexibly, finding humour and striving for accuracy. In talent development we made a keynote with the process of what we did, and pictures of Canstruction. I just finished getting a background and virtual pets for my blog.

Monday 11 June 2012

Red m&m

Today in Canstruction we  carried on with our  Activinspire M&Ms. We changed the colour to red because when it was yellow it was hard to see the M on his tummy.  We worked out how many cans are going to be on each layer, and how many cans we will need altogether, which is 382!

Monday 4 June 2012

kowhaiwhai panels

Today at enrich we finished our kowhaiwhai panels next we are doing talent devalepment i am on maths. In maths today we used ActivInspire and started a new M & M drawing using can shapes.    After lunch we had passion time.  I did science.  We did an experiment with eggs and vinegar

Monday 21 May 2012

Enrich

At Enrich today I played chess with Alana, Blake and Hyrum.  I won against Blake, but I lost to Alana and Hyrum.  I moved up the leaderboard.  I am now number 15 out of 32.  I was number 25 last week so I have improved!  For talent development we used Google Sketch Up.  This is a computer programme where we measured squares and circles to make a blueprint for our M&M design.

Monday 14 May 2012

Canstruction

This morning we did Canstruction. We were learning about circles for our M&M's.  We were working out how many cans we are going to need to use - starting with the very first layer on the bottom, until the middle of the design.  We had to solve how big each circle needed to be.

Monday 30 April 2012

Field trip

This  morning I  played  a  game called  Bartbonte  duck  I   made  it  to  level  7! It is a thinking game on a website.

At 10:30 we went for a walk to the museum and looked at the Wearable Arts.  My favourite one was brown and made out of leather.  My second favourite was silver and black.  It was made out of chains.

Sunday 1 April 2012

Hi Jackson.
You have settled in well at Enrich.  You are beginning to prioritise what needs to be achieved each day, and organising yourself to complete set tasks.  You engage fully in every aspect of Enrich, and you always try your hardest.  I’m so pleased you are enjoying chess and carrying games over to morning tea and lunch to get them finished!  The workshops you have been attending will be helping a great deal.  Keep up the great effort Jackson.  Katie.

Monday 26 March 2012

Today at Enrich.

Today we started with chess.  I played Matt.  He won.  After chess, we went into our talent development groups.  I am in Maths.  We looked at some different Canstructions, and decided on our design.  We are going to do 2 M+Ms - the red (chocolate) and the yellow (peanut) one.  We finished our SCAMPER task today.  I worked with Kyle.  At lunchtime, I played Matthew twice in chess.  I won both games.  This afternoon I went to the I-photo editing workshop with Katie.  I learnt how to edit my photos.  My favourite photo was this one:

My first blog

Today Alana showed Neave,  Matt, Maleko and I our own blog to use at Enrich.

Today I have also learnt how to do some water colour painting.  Mine had trees and a wolf in it.

In science we did a tornado experiment.  The bubbles in the water made a tornado, it was cool!
